Weapons Of Choice

The Cars: Lamborghini LP-610 Huracan Spyder VS McLaren 570S

The Location: Carmel, California

The Lamboghini LP610-4 Haracan Spyder:

Let’s start with the stats: 610 horsepower, all wheel drive,  and a drop-top. From that stance the Huracan Spyder immediately grabs attention…that and the bright orange-pearl paint. From the exterior the Huracan is unmistakably Lamborghini: It looks angular and aggressive. As the baby bull in the line up, it does look a bit softer than the flagship hypercar-destroyer class Aventador. But the standard Aventador has 2 more cylinders and about 90 more horsepower. The Huracan is the entry-level supercar in the family, and the Spyder version starts at about $255,000. So it carries a heftier premium than the McLaren; the question is, is it worth an extra $60,000 over the McLaren? Let’s find out.

Inside the Huracan feels snug and approachable, and firing up the V10 gives one an instant case of excitement chills as the 610 horses under the hood growl to life. Visibility from the Huracan is great, especially with the top down, and having the open top experience with the Huracan really allows you to hear the V10 in all it’s glory. In Corsa Mode, the V10 roars, burbles and bellows as you hit the throttle and suddenly feel the world rocket by. While the Huracan has all wheel drive it’s engine is naturally aspirated, so the sound and pull from the engine are instant, pure, and primal.

The Huracan has plenty of straight-line speed, as you reach the redline and shift up, you always feel the car is pressing you to go faster. In the twisties the Hurcan feel nimble and fun. It makes playful sounds and the grip is immense. It gives you a sense of speed that is thrilling but not terrifying…everything feel accessible. The dual clutch is so smooth and immediate that shifts almost don’t register.

Overall the Huracan is so easy to drive that you could actually drive it and use it every day. It’s almost too clever and civilized. The other down sides are that the turn signals take way longer than they should to figure out and in comparison with it’s big brother, the savagely insane Aventador Roadster we drove before, the Huracan feels far more tame. But the Aventador Roadster is $200,000 more with much more power and a single clutch transmission.

The McLaren 570S:

photo-aug-19-5-38-55-pm

For the McLaren, the numbers are as follows: 570 Horsepower turbocharged V8 paired with rear-wheel drive, at a starting price of $195,000. Stacking against the Huracan Spyder, it’s already looking like a bargain, though we should mention that the $198,000 Huracan LP580-2 is actually the most direct competitor. But I digress. The 570S has a very interesting insect-like design language, but it is pretty cool to see the signature “McLaren swoosh” logo shape incorporated into the design of the front and and headlamps.

On the inside the 570S feels snug and tight, like a race car. Turning it on is not as dramatic an event as the Huracan, but McLaren is more about subtly and performance. They don’t talk…they just do. Taking the 570S on the road you would think you where in a low slung Toyota Camry…it’s quite, civil, and actually comfortable. Throw the 570S into sport mode and you feel a thousand little things sharpen up to let you know the car is ready to go.

photo-aug-19-5-56-24-pm

In a straight line the 570S has a bit of pull and the f1 style light cluster on top of the steering wheel lights up to let you know when to shift, and armed with a dual-clutch transmission the shifts are rapid and sooth. Put the car in the turns and the 570S shows you just what it can do as it feels like a rocket-powered go kart. It eats up turns without giving you any doubts about it’s ability to take on more. Because the car’s performance feels so accessible, the 570S actually inspires a lot of confidence in pushing it further and further to the limit.

With a drive like that, what’s not to like? Well to start, the sound of the engine is very subdued. It sounds more sterilized than vivacious and there is a noticeable amount of lag in the turbos. The braking also felt a little slower than expected, so when going fast you have to brake a little bit sooner than you’d expect to. Overall it drives great, but the drive is not emotionally exciting. If you want to get your kicks by getting the fastest and most technical lap times, then this is the car for you. But if you want something that makes you feel alive and convinces you that’s it’s alive as well, the 570S isn’t it.

The Verdict:

Both cars are very clever in their own ways and appeal to very different drivers. The Huracan is lively, loud and makes you feel like a 10-year old on Christmas day with each press of the gas pedal. It looks aggressive and sporty and the car feels like a velociraptor  wrecking havoc across the jungle when in Corsa Mode. The McLaren is more serious and technical, and the fun comes from agility and accessibility of the cars performance. It is very much the thinking man’s supercar: it appeals to the intellect, not the emotion.

If we had to choose one it’d hands down be the Huracan. The looks, speed, and power add up for a much more magical and lively experience. We could see ourselves daily driving one easily, it’s that’s fun and easy to live with. The McLaren is a great machine no doubt, and I would say if you want a Porsche with more flair get this instead. But if you want proper supercar, if you want something that inspires emotion, than Italian is the only way to go.

Monterey Car Week 2016

We must say, we’re not sure how they do it, but each year Monterey Car Week gets better than the previous year! This year we attended the Quail Lodge Motorsports Gathering while paying a visit to the Hospitality Villas of BMW, Bentley, Lamborghini and McLaren.

Aside from the amazing car sights, the weather and food where in perfect form as well making an already amazing event even more spectacular. Toss in the 50th birthday of the Lamborghini Miura, the 100th birthday of BMW and the fact that we drove the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder and McLaren 570S, it was truly one of the best days of 2016. You can read about out our thoughts on the Huracan vs the 570S in our next article. For now, we’ll stop talking and let you enjoy the pictures from a truly one of a kind day.

Cheers,

The Chiron & Centenario: Chasing Car Dreams

It’s been a crazy car week this week! We got up close and Personal with two of the most insane cars ever created, the Bugatti Chiron and the Lamborghini LP770-4 Centenario.

The Bugatti Chiron is replacing the record-breaking Veyron as a heavy weight contender for King of Hypercars. And judging by the stats it’s easy to see why: 1,500 Horsepower, a $3 million price tag and looks that are sleek, refined, aggressive, and pay homage to legendary Bugatti deigns of the past. Don’t take our word for it, take a look:

We are dying to see just how fast this manster is, but in the meantime we’ll take a trip over to Italy. The Lamborghini LP770-4 Centenario is outgoing CEO’s Stephan Winkelmann’s parting gift to the Italian brand he’s spent the last 11 years building into a serious company. The Centenario is named to celebrate the 100th birthday of Lamborghini himself, Ferruccio Lamborghini.

While the stats for the Centenario include 770 Horsepower, 4 wheel steering, looks that out crazy all of their past insanity combined, and a limited run of only 20 coupes and 20 roadsters. Lamborghini has always been “those guys” aka that one friend that’s always doing something crazier than last time, and this car is no exception. We’d love to see one in action, though with only 40 in the world it might be easier to catch a leprechaun while riding a unicorn while blindfolded. For now, we’ll just enjoy these shots we took of this mythical beast.

Cheers,

Thermal Track Attack

After an awesome Lamborghini event on Friday, how did we top off our weekend? With a BMW M track day at Thermal Race Club on Sunday of course! New Century BMW was kind enough to sponsor a day of M Performance School driving and we were glad to get a chance to properly test out the newest BMW M models.

20150712_131007

The day started with some lead-follow track time, pushing the new F80 M3 to it’s limits. The next event, which was easily the most amount of childish fun we’ve had in a long time was the F82 M4 drag racing. Old friends became instant rivals as M4’s tore up the track to earn top bragging rights.

For the third course, we were given some track time in the M235i, the X5M and the X6M. We had a blast getting familiar with the driving dynamics of each and were admittedly surprised by how capable the X series cars are. The fourth event of the day was a competitive autocross course in the F80 M3. There we no friends here, just lap times and more bragging rights.

And finally for dessert, we got the privilege of hot-lapping the F80 M3 with our racing instructors. All we can say is that it was a true blast to have a professional show us just what the new M3 can do, from holding insane angles of drift to crazy speeds in the straights, it was an unforgettable experience. We want to thank New Century BMW for hosting a great event, our instructors from BMW M Performance School for improving our skills and showing us how it’s done, and our M Club LA members that came out had a blast!

This summer is off to a fun start!

Enter The SV

On Friday July 10th, we attended an exclusive Lamborghini SV event held by Lamborghini La Jolla. It was a delightful evening with to celbrate Lamborghini’s most sacred badge, the SV. Examples of each SV variant were present, with a $3 million Miura SV Jota, a 1997 Diablo SV (Which looks like the Need For Speed III Cover car), a 2009 Murcielago LP670 SV in Matte White (Bianco Canopus, to be exact), and the most insane Lamborghini to date; the hyper-fast Aventador LP750 SV (Which lapped the famed Nürburgring in under 7 minutes).

All in all a great event showcasing some of best models Lamborghini has unleashed upon the world. We look forward to driving the Aventador SV in the near future!

August Lifestyle M Drive Event Recap

Sunday, August 31st, 2014. The morning air is filled with the sounds of engines and exhaust notes as cars from all over gather for another amazing Supercar Sunday show. Cars from America, Japan, Europe and elsewhere gathered in celebration of the So Cal car culture. But this particular Supercar Sunday there was a special gathering of cars from Germany; ready for a special day.

mclubla_4-1

Coordinating with Supercar Sunday and local independent shop Coastline Motorsport, M Club LA (Motorsport Club Los Angeles) had a special drive event that began at Supercar Sunday. This event was a BMW featured marque drive, and in total there were 30 BMW’s. The group consisted mainly of M models, from local enthusiasts as well as a brand new M4 brought out by Century West BMW. The drivers browsed around the world famous Supercar Sunday to get a morning car culture fix, and then near the end of the show, the group gathered in their cars and headed to the canyons.

mclubla_9

The drive consisted of a 105 mile route through the gorgeous Malibu canyon scenery and Pacific Coast Highway ocean side. Cruising through twisty roads in the mountains to begin with, the drive led to the coast for some amazing morning Californian coastal views, before heading back up through the canyons. The route was very scenic, with a plethora of sight and views from the Santa Monica mountain range overlooking all of the coasts and valleys, before taking another turn back down to the coast. The last stretch of the route curved through the country side past Point Mugu and Lake Sherwood to the final destination; Lavaggio Auto Detailing Center.

mclubla_5

At Lavaggio, Coastline Motorsport brought out a stunning example of an E30 M3 and a gourmet lunch was provided. Fresh with road dust from the drive, many members had their cars fully pampered and detailed, since Lavaggio host top notch one-of-kind facilities and service. Supercars in the morning, drive in the afternoon, with a gourmet lunch and car pampering, this M drive event was a great success! We at M Club LA would love to thank our sponsors and hosts Supercar Sunday, Coastline Motorsport, and Lavaggio for helping us put together another spectacular event!
